This is a long-term ethnographic study of a poor, urban neighborhood. The study examines the ways in which decency and violence are intertwined in the lives of residents. The study also explores the moral life of the inner city, and the ways in which residents navigate the challenges of poverty, crime, and violence.

Methods
The study was conducted over a period of five years. The researcher spent a total of two years living in the neighborhood, and conducted hundreds of interviews with residents. The researcher also attended community events and meetings, and observed everyday life in the neighborhood.
