- The United Kingdom and the European Union agreed to extend the Brexit deadline to October 31, 2019. The extension was granted to allow more time for negotiations on a withdrawal agreement.
- The United Nations Security Council adopted a resolution condemning the use of chemical weapons in Syria. The resolution called for an independent investigation into the alleged use of chemical weapons and for those responsible to be held accountable.
Business
- The Sensex and the Nifty, the two benchmark indices of the Indian stock market, closed at record highs on Independence Day. The Sensex closed at 40,000.96, while the Nifty closed at 11,919.85.
- The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) kept the repo rate unchanged at 6% in its latest monetary policy review. The RBI also maintained its accommodative stance, indicating that it is willing to cut rates further if necessary to support economic growth.
- The International Monetary Fund (IMF) lowered its growth forecast for the global economy in 2019 and 2020. The IMF cited trade tensions and geopolitical uncertainties as the main factors behind the downgrade.

- India defeated Pakistan by 5 wickets in the Cricket World Cup match at the Old Trafford Cricket Ground in Manchester, England. Rohit Sharma scored a century for India, while Jasprit Bumrah was named the Man of the Match for his bowling performance.
