Early Life and Education

Benjamin Tallmadge was born in Setauket, New York, on February 25, 1754. He was the son of Benjamin Tallmadge Sr., a farmer and merchant, and Elizabeth Floyd Tallmadge. Tallmadge had two older sisters and two younger brothers.

Tallmadge's father died when he was young, and his mother remarried. Tallmadge did not get along well with his stepfather, and he left home at the age of 16 to live with his uncle in Wethersfield, Connecticut.

Tallmadge attended Yale College, where he studied classics, mathematics, and philosophy. He graduated in 1773, and then studied law.

Military Career

When the Revolutionary War broke out in 1775, Tallmadge joined the Continental Army as a captain. He served in the 2nd Continental Light Dragoons, and he quickly rose through the ranks.

In 1777, Tallmadge was promoted to colonel and appointed Washington's chief intelligence officer. In this role, Tallmadge was responsible for gathering information about the British Army and reporting it to Washington.

Tallmadge played a key role in many of the most important battles of the war, including the Battle of Saratoga and the Battle of Yorktown. He was also involved in the planning of Benedict Arnold's treasonous plot to surrender West Point to the British.

After the war, Tallmadge served in the Continental Congress and the House of Representatives. He also served as a judge in New York State.
