Early Life and Career

Ray Brown was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on October 13, 1926. He began playing the bass at the age of 11, and by the age of 15 he was playing professionally. In 1944, he joined Dizzy Gillespie's big band, and in 1947 he joined the Oscar Peterson Trio. Brown played with Peterson for many years, and the two musicians developed a close friendship and musical rapport. In the 1950s, Brown also played with other jazz greats such as Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, and John Coltrane.

Bass Transcriptions

One of Brown's most significant contributions to jazz was his work on bass transcriptions. Brown began transcribing the bass lines of other jazz bassists in the early 1950s, and he continued to transcribe bass lines throughout his career.
