Milton was a bishop in the Church of the United Brethren in Christ, and Susan was a homemaker. Katharine had two older brothers, Orville and Wilbur, and a younger sister, Ida.

In 1915, Katharine married Harry Haskell Gross, a lawyer and politician. The couple had two children, a son named Wright and a daughter named Katharine. She was also a member of the Women's Aeronautical Association, and she helped to establish the Amelia Earhart Fund.
