Petrov-Vodkin was born in Khvalynsk, Russia, in 1878. He studied art at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture, and later in Paris. In 1910, he returned to Russia and became a member of the avant-garde group known as the Union of Youth. Petrov-Vodkin's work was exhibited in major exhibitions in Russia and abroad, and he quickly gained recognition as one of the most talented artists of his generation.
After the Russian Revolution in 1917, Petrov-Vodkin became involved in the design of propaganda posters and other works of art for the new Soviet government. However, he also continued to paint more personal works, which explored the themes of revolution, war, and peace. In 1925, Petrov-Vodkin was awarded the Order of the Red Banner for his contributions to Soviet art.
In the 1930s, Petrov-Vodkin's work became increasingly abstract. He began to experiment with new techniques and materials, and his work became more expressionistic. In 1937, he was accused of formalism by the Soviet government, and his work was banned from being exhibited. Petrov-Vodkin died in Leningrad in 1939.
Petrov-Vodkin's work has been rediscovered in recent years, and he is now considered one of the most important figures in the development of modern art. His work is held in major museums around the world, and his paintings continue to be exhibited in major exhibitions.
